Mismatch of First Order A Priori Information in Iterative Source-Channel Decoding

چکیده
Due to complexity and delay constraints a usually significant amount of residual redundancy remains in the source samples after source coding. This residual redundancy can be exploited by iterative source-channel decoding for error concealment and quality improvements. One key design issue in joint source-channel (de-)coding is the index assignment. Besides conventional index assignments optimized index assignments have been developed, e.g., considering zeroth or first order a priori information of the source samples. However, in real-world scenarios it is unlikely that the amount of residual redundancy is constant over time and thus it may occur that the just deployed index assignment is suboptimal at times the residual redundancy differs too much from the amount that it is optimized for. In this paper the performance of optimized index assignments is examined that consider first order a priori knowledge under such suboptimal conditions.

Sequential Decoding for Mobile Receivers
Currently many classical detection and decoding algorithms receive new attention in mobile communications. Amongst those classics are low density parity check codes [1], concatenated codes [2], weighted decoding with log-likelihood values as well as soft-in/soft-out decoding as performed by the BCJR algorithm and its derivatives [4], [5]. All four classics show up as key elements in the so-call...

Abstract: Since joint source-channel decoding is capable of exploiting the residual redundancy in the source signals for improving the attainable error resilience, it has attracted substantial attention. Motivated by the principle of exploiting the source redundancy at the receiver, in this treatise, the authors study the application of iterative source-channel decoding (ISCD) aided video commu...
متن کاملCombined Source/Channel (De-)Coding: Can a Priori Information be Used Twice?
In digital transmission of speech, audio, images and video signals residual redundancy is often left after source coding due to the complexity and delay constraints. This redundancy remains both inside one block or frame but also in a time correlation of subsequent frames. We describe an approach to improve channel and source decoding by using both kinds of correlation. Further on we consider t...
متن کاملOn Iterative Source-channel Decoding for Variable-length Encoded Markov Sources Using a Bit-level Trellis
In this paper we present a novel bit-level soft-input / softoutput decoding algorithm for variable-length encoded packetized Markov sources transmitted over wireless channels. An interesting feature of the proposed approach is that symbol-based source statistics in form of transition probabilities of the Markov source are exploited as a-priori information on a bit-level trellis. When additional...
متن کاملIterative Source-Channel Decoding for Robust Image Transmission
In this paper we investigate iterative source-channel decoding for robust JPEG coded images transmission over noisy channels. Huffman codes used as the variable-length coding scheme in JPEG coding can be represented by an irregular trellis structure proposed by Balakirsky (1997). State transition probabilities can be derived from the irregular trellis and can be used as a priori information to ...
